The vision for the Northbridge History Project was to create an inspiring historical context for the future development of Northbridge as an uniquely attractive place to visit, work and live.
The Northbridge History Project (NHP) was established in recognition that Northbridge is a significant part of the capital city. It arose from recommendations from the Busch Report which was requested by Premier Richard Court. The Project's brief is to capture the history of Northbridge before it is lost and use the history in the revitalisation of the area. Use of history to proactively restore business and community confidence has been used elsewhere to rejuvenate inner-city areas (e.g. the Rocks, Lygon Street). The collection and community understanding of the history was vital to ensure that the interpretation and revitalisation of Northbridge is done authentically and so adds value to the city as the state Capital.
Oral histories, photographs, documents, film and other sources were gathered and are stored electronically. These electronic sources are available to the public via the Electronic Archive.
This website contains the Electronic Archive of the Northbridge History Project. You can use it to:
To access the Electronic Archive, see the search facility on the right hand side.
The Electronic Archive contains images, documents, oral histories, maps, movies, displays, unpublished materials, student work and presentations from the annual Studies Day.
You can search the Archive by media type or community group, or by using keywords. If you use a keyword search, it will bring up all the media that relates to that word. For example, by typing ‘milk’ into the search bar you will bring up all the resources on the archive where ‘milk’ is mentioned. We recommend you do not enter search terms such as ‘Street’ or ‘Northbridge’ as these will return a large number of items.
The history of Northbridge is the history of the people who shaped and made it unique.
Welcome to the Northbridge History Project’s Electronic Archive.
